Companion Care
Companion care provides non-medical, social support to help you stay connected, engaged, and safe. Your Elderplan Advantage for Nursing Home Residents (HMO-POS I-SNP) plan includes a Companion Care benefit for eligible members — so you can have company, conversation, and a helping hand for everyday moments.
Benefit at a Glance
| Service | What You Pay | Side Note |
|---|---|---|
| Companion Care | $0 | Up to 104 hours per year, in 4-hour increments; referrals may be required |
Who Is Eligible?
Companion care is part of the Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI). To receive it, you must be an SSBCI-eligible member — eligibility is based on having certain qualifying chronic conditions. Members who are not SSBCI-eligible do not receive this benefit.
What Counts as Companion Care?
- Companionship and conversation to reduce isolation
- Friendly check-ins and supervision for safety and reassurance
- Reminders for daily routines and appointments
- Help with light, non-hands-on everyday tasks
- A supportive presence during activities or downtime
Note: Companion care is generally non-medical and does not include hands-on personal care like bathing, dressing, or toileting — that kind of help falls under home health aide or custodial care, which the plan defines separately.
